The Hand of Fear was Sarah Jane’s last story. Memorable moments in it – Sarah in the Andy Pandy outfit, the explosion in the quarry, Eldrad’s regenerations – both of them, and Sarah’s departure from the TARDIS and from The Doctor’s life. The disembodied hand moving managed to be a pretty decent special effect and the contrast between the stark normality of Earth and the alien home of Eldrad was effective. Particularly effective were the scenes shot inside a REAL nuclear power station that gave it an extra touch of realism. And who didn’t get a little lump in their throat as Sarah Jane, one of the best loved of all companions, moved on.

Extras

Commentary by Tom Baker, Elizabeth Sladen, Judith Paris, Philip Hinchcliffe and Bob Baker. Again, Tom and Elizabeth are a good combination with input from Judith, who was the female Eldrad as well as Producer Philip and writer Bob. Informative and entertaining.

Changing Time. A 50 Minute documentary about the making of Hand of Fear and also the special relationship between The Doctor and Sarah Jane. Occasionally reiterates material covered in the commentary, but no harm in that.

Swap Shop – Noel Edmonds interviews Tom Baker and Sarah Jane Smith for Multicoloured Swap Shop on 2nd October, 1976. Slightly less patronizing than Blue Peter, but still terribly dated. Nostalgia value for fans of Saturday morning TV.

Continuity Compilation – introductions and closing announcements for the episodes. Minimum nostalgia value.

Production Subtitles for extra insight into the making of the programme.

The Doctor Who Annual 1977 - (DVD ROM) A must read for Doctor Who Fans.

10/10

As with Genesis the inclusion of rather dull fillers like Swap Shop and the Continuity announcements spoils the extras enjoyment.
