Spearhead From Space is a landmark story. It is Jon Pertwee’s first outing as the Third Doctor, it is the first colour Doctor Who episode. It is the first story to be made after man walked on the moon and the Human space age began, making it ironic that The Doctor was now confined to Earth. This story sees the new version of The Doctor finding his feet, coming to terms with his own new identity, and at the same time, fighting a new and deadly enemy.

Commentary

Commentary is by Nicholas Courtney and Caroline John, Brigadier and Liz Shaw respectively. The feeling of the commentary is of two old friends meeting up after a long time and talking over old times. There are lots of anecdotes, most notably Caroline’s problems with going to the toilet on location. As one of the few female performers in the cast, they seem to have neglected her basic needs a little. It isn’t a commentary for people interested in technical detail, but definitely one for classic fans.

Extras

1989 trailers for BBC2 – All these seem to prove is that rock music and female continuity announcers had come to BBC2 by 1989. The second one looked and sounded like an advert for Action Man.

1999 trailer for Doctor Who Night – a celebration of Doctor Who which came ten years after the series was axed was a clever piece involving a perfectly happy child sitting on the sofa and a terrified adult behind it – a reminder that Who fans had grown up over the years.

8/10

U.N.I.T. Recruiting Film, made for the 1999 Doctor Who Night, was a rather good bit of fun. It was presented much like a real army recruiting film, apart from the bits where they talk about losing men in battle. The Brigadier talks about his life in the Regiment and ordinary soldiers give their opinion of their unusual work.

Photo Gallery is one of those annoying slide show affairs that I have never liked and too many black and white images and too many of Jon posing in silly ways.

There really aren’t enough extras. A making of documentary would have been nice. A bit disappointing in that respect.
