Marion’s first time trip begins with the consequences of their weekend away – Cath Benning’s innuendos about what they had done. Of course, there ARE rules about student/teacher relationships within universities. Summers schools tend to be a bit more relaxed about that kind of thing, but nevertheless, they were breaking the rules by seeing each other socially. It isn’t something that will go away. But it is a small problem in the long run which will be dealt with in a few episodes. As Kristoph says, they belong to the UNIVERSE and that is bigger than university rules. And so to Marion’s first real trip in the TARDIS. Bear in mind, of course, that Kristoph’s TARDIS has a working chameleon switch just like his son’s in the Theta Sigma series. It starts off as a stationary cupboard in this episode, and arrives in New York as a newsstand. Meanwhile, this is Marion’s first look at the TARDIS. She is, obviously, amazed by it. I based the interior slightly on the secondary console seen in some of Tom Baker’s episodes, with old fashioned wood panels around the walls. The etchings on the panels are a bit of invention. The pictures of the Time Lord who is regenerated after fighting a dragon is a clue to another of the secrets Marion still has to learn about Kristoph and his species. These stories are set, in real time, around about the early 1990s. I established in Theta Sigma that Marion was born in 1973, making her nineteen in 1992. As it happened, there was a revival of the musical Guys and Dolls in that year, so it fitted nicely as an evening treat when Kristoph took Marion to New York in his TARDIS. I’ve never actually seen it, so I didn’t go into too much detail about it, but let’s assume they had a really good time.
