Amy Pond was born in Scotland but orphaned at an early age and lived
with her aunt in the English village of Leadworth. She first met The
Doctor when she was seven and his TARDIS crashed in her garden. After
her first meeting she was accidentally left waiting twelve years to
see The Doctor again by which time she had adopted the name "Amy"
instead of Amelia and found herself a boyfriend Rory who was a general
nurse. She herself was working as a kissogram. The Doctor then left
her for another two years by mistake while giving the new TARDIS a test-drive.
Amy joined the Doctor in his travels at the age of 21, the night before
she was to be married.
Karen Sheila Gillan was born on 28 November 1987
and grew up in Inverness, Scotland. Her father, Raymond John, a Day
Centre Manager, and mother, Marie, live in Kinmylies. Aged 16, she
decided to pursue her acting career further, studying acting at Edinburgh's
Telford College. Later, she secured a place at the Italia Conti Academy
of Theatre Arts drama school in London on the BA (Hons) Acting degree
course.
While not acting, Karen has taken part in numerous modelling events
including 2007's London Fashion Week for designer Allegra Hicks' autumn/winter
catwalk show.
She was cast for the role of the Eleventh Doctor's
first companion, Amy Pond in early 2009. She had previously appeared
in the episode "The Fires of Pompeii" in a minor role as
a soothsayer.
