Barbara Wright travelled with the Doctor
between An Unearthly Child and The Chase.
Barbara was a teacher at Coal Hill School when
and her fellow teacher sought out the home of their pupil, Susan Foreman,
only to be kidnapped by her grandfather, the mysterious doctor, and
plunged into terrifying adventures in time and space. Barbara was
a bright, intelligent woman, but sometimes found being IN history
instead of teaching it was difficult. She found it hard not to apply
her 1960s values to the past. That was especially noticeable in The
Aztecs when the idea of the human sacrifices apalled her. She formed
a close big sister relationshup with first Susan and then Vicki. She
also gradually became fond of The Doctor, with whom she had something
of a father/daughter relationship. When she and Ian eventually took
the opportunity to return home it was an emotional parting.

Jacqueline Hill, born 17 December 1929 was best known for her role
as Barbara Wright in Doctor Who.
Jacqueline trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made
her stage debut in London's West End in The Shrike. Many more roles
followed, including, on television, Shop Window, Fabian of the Yard
and An Enemy of the People. It was around this time that she married
top director Alvin Rakoff, who, at the insistence of Jacqueline Hill,
cast her opposite Sean Connery in one of ABC TV's Armchair Theatre
plays. She was asked to play Barbara Wright in Doctor Who after she
and producer Verity Lambert, whom she knew socially, discussed the
role at a party. Soon after leaving the series in 1965 she gave up
acting to raise a family. However, she resumed her career in 1979
and gained further TV credits in, amongst other programmes, Tales
of the Unexpected and as Lady Capulet in the BBC Television Shakespeare
version of Romeo and Juliet in 1978. She died of cancer in February,
1993.
