Jo Grant was associated with the Doctor between Terror of the Autons and The Green Death. Josephine "Jo" Grant had only just completed a brief training period as a spy when she had her uncle use his influence to assign her to UNIT. UNIT assigned her to The Doctor, possibly because she wasn't a particularly GOOD spy and they thought she would be out of the way in his laboratory, holding test tubes. As The Doctor's replacement for Cambridge graduatem Liz, Jo was not an instant success with him, ruining an experiment and being hypnotised by The Master, but he grew extremely fond of her in a fatherly way. He appreciated her very Human way of looking at things and the fact that she never lacked the courage to have a go, even when she was scared - a quality that so many of his female companions shared.
When his exile on Earth was lifted she travelled with him to several other planets, and on two of them she had marriage proposals. First from King Peladon (of Peladon) and then from Latep, one of the Thals colinising Spiridon after the defeat of the Daleks. But the pull of Earth made her reject both of those, and it was a Welshman, Professor Clifford Jones, who won her heart. Significantly, she told The Doctor that Clifford was a lot like him, only her own age and species.
In 1975 she married Raynor Burton, but that marriage lasted only two months. She gave birth to twins in 1978 with Dean Harris whom she later married. She has been with current partner Barry Crocker since 1990. She played the part of Jo from 1971 to 1973 alongside Jon Pertwee's incarnation of the Doctor. Katy struck up an immediate rapport with her co-stars, Pertwee, Nicholas Courtney (The Brigadier), John Levene (Sergeant Benton), Richard Franklin (Captain Mike Yates) and Roger Delgado (the Master). Fans of "Doctor Who" often refer to these characters as the UNIT family — UNIT, the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce, being the fictional United Nations squad that the Doctor worked for. In 1973, Roger Delgado, who played the Master, the Doctor's mortal enemy — was killed when his car crashed during a film shoot. Katy was so upset that she decided to leave the show. Jon Pertwee, equally devastated by the loss of Delgado, followed suit a year later. Katy moved to Australia and was also seen in a famous Ruby Wax segment with long time childhood friend Liza Minelli. Katy's connection with "Doctor Who" continues: she is also the voice of the Time Lady Iris Wildthyme in several of the Big Finish Productions audio plays. In 1978 she aroused controversy when she posed naked with an original Dalek prop for the glamour magazine Girl Illustrated. She laughed the furore off, stating "You'd have to pretty well put me under a microscope to see anything!" To which Jon Pertwee was quoted as saying "Typical Katy!" Katy Manning wrote the TV series Private Wives and has been involved in other writing and direction projects. She appeared on stage in Australia in the play Run For Your Wife, during (1987-1988), and the production toured the country. Other members of the cast in the production were Jack Smethurst, David McCallum and Eric Sykes. She has also appeared in the underground horror movie When Darkness Falls.
