Martha was training to be a doctor when she met The
Doctor. After an adventure on the moon, he invited her to take on
trip. That became two trips, then three, before she got her own key
and invited her to become a permanent companion. That she was becoming
fond of The Doctor was obvious to Tallulah, who she met in 1930 London,
and when The Doctor, as John Smith, fell in love with Matron Joan
Martha felt deeply that he did not fall in love with her. When he
became The Doctor again she was embarrassed to have admitted that
she ‘loved him to bits’. Martha’s relationship with
The Doctor proved difficult because he himself tried to distance himself
from her emotionally. He was still on the rebound from Rose and not
ready for any deeper relationship. But he seemed glad to have her
as a friend. After the events surrounding Mr Saxon - The Master and
his attempt to destroy the planet, she left The Doctor to complete
her studies. She got a job with UNIT, recommended to them by The Doctor.
She has also lent a hand at Torchwood where she was reuinited with
Jack Harkness. Later, the Sontaran crisis meant that she had to recall
The Doctor to Earth and she worked with him and new companion Donna
to prevent Atmos from poisoning the planet. And when the Daleks unleashed
their most deadly plan yet, Martha was faced with the terrible duty
of activating the Osterhagen Key, a weapon that would destroy the
Earth. Instead, she put her faith in The Doctor and was one of the
companions who joined forces to help him defeat Davros and the Imperial
Dalek and save the universe itself.
Martha briefly encountered the Doctor again in End of Time when she and Mickey Smith, who she had recently married, were trying to capture a Sontaran. The two were working together as freelance alien hunters.

Agyeman had previously portrayed Martha Jones's cousin Adeola Oshodi, who was killed by the Cybermen in Doctor Who episode Army of Ghosts. During her first season in the role of Martha, there was a tabloid article that reported she had been axed from the show, but despite her character's departure from the TARDIS in season finale "Last of the Time Lords", the BBC confirmed that she will return in series four for five episodes. In the meantime, she has appeared in three episodes of Torchwood, appearing in "Reset", "Dead Man Walking" and "A Day in the Death", before her character departed to return to her job as a Medical Officer with UNIT.
