The First Doctor was an unlikely hero. He was an old man who often forgot what he was saying, was bad-tempered and downright cruel at times. But he could also be kind and considerate and when his confidence was won he was a firm friend. He showed courage in the face of danger and inspired others to the same courage. No more so than when he faced the Daleks and urged his companions 'we have to dare to defeat them'.

He was a mystery to the humans who joined him in his travels. Clearly he didn't come from Earth. Neither did his granddaughter, Susan, but neither of them would talk about their true origins.
