The Second Doctor was a shock to
the system. Gone was the cranky but benevolent grandfather to be replaced
by what at first seemed to be a devil-may-care clown. His trademark
tin whistle and hobo clothes disguised a wit and intellect, though.
And that was his best weapon against his enemies. Almost always they
mistook him for a fool who could be discounted in their plans and
he outwitted them with clever trickery and sound scientific knowledge.
His friends found him a gentle, kind man. His enemies often felt the
steel beneath. He could appear to be a coward – when outnumbered
his reaction was to run. But that was simply his way of exercising
the better part of valour. His courage could not be doubted by those
who truly knew him. He had emotional vulnerabilities that showed through
from time to time. When he told Victoria that his family slept in
his mind, we saw a flash of his hidden tragedy. For the first time,
we learnt that The Doctor was a Time Lord, one of a race of powerful
people, but with very little tolerance for dissent, and when they
caught up with him he had to fight for his life. |
