The Third Doctor was much more of an action man than his predecessors. Where the Second would run away, he was more likely to run towards the danger with a cunning plan to defeat the enemy. Exiled to Earth and seconded to U.N.I.T., he retained his pacifism to the end and was often at odds with his military colleagues over their hasty actions. Even more than ever, the scientist was to the fore, with his TARDIS parked in his own laboratory in U.N.I.T. Headquarters. He was also the gadget Doctor, utilising not only Bessie, the vintage car with a jet age engine, but also the whomobile, helicopters, jet skis and all kinds of machinery. Gone was the hobo, replaced by a Doctor who was always smartly dressed, positively dapper in velvet cloak and frilled shirt and smoking jacket. He was an avuncular figure, becoming close to his U.N.I.T. assistants, Liz, Jo, and Sarah Jane. |
