Tom Baker - 1974-1981

The Fourth Doctor was the most alien of them all. He emphasised the fact every time any of his companions, especially the Brigadier, should happen to forget it. He resented far more than his predecessor his connections with Earth and sought to get away from there as often as possible. Many of his companions, though humanoid, were not from Earth. Curiously, though, having severed his connections, he often found himself returning, retaining an affection for his second home as long as he was free to leave it.

The Fourth Doctor returned to his first home, Gallifrey, twice, and there, too, found himself both loving and resenting the ties that bound him. Even Gallifrey couldn’t hold the wanderer in time and space.

Physically, he was a bohemian with boundless energy, the fittest and youngest Doctor yet, who, while avoiding violence when he could, was not afraid to take the offensive if he must.

Famously, of course, he is the one who baulked at committing genocide when he had the chance to destroy the Daleks, the ultimate act of pacifism in the face of evil.
