Sylvester McCoy, 1986-1989
The
Seventh Doctor first appeared to be a clown in the way of Patrick Troughton's
Second Doctor, with his strangely mangled phrases and his rolling vowels,
and a way of apparently stumbling on the solution to the problem rather
than solving it by his own wit. It was all a careful cover, though,
just as the Second Doctor’s hobo persona was. Underneath was the
same keen intelligence, and as he settled into his incarnation a darkness
was frequently seen beneath the jumper with the quirky question marks
on. That darkness sometimes threatened to overwhelm him, and it frightened
those around him, especially Ace, who bore the brunt of that darkness
more than once – especially when he almost cruelly forced to face
her own past in Ghostlight and Curse of Fenric.
The Seventh Doctor more than ever before, met his foes head on, playing
them at their own game, sometimes ruthlessly. He was still a pacifist,
and sought to avoid bloodshed, and yet he became more of an aggressor
than any of his previous incarnations. Small wonder even his enemies
questioned who he really was and where he came from. |
