Ianto Jones was recruited to Torchwood by Jack Harkness and has worked his way up to a certain level of responsibility within the organisation, having originally been little more than a teaboy. He also has an on off relationship with Jack and showed distinct signs of jealousy when he saw how attractive The Doctor was.

When the Daleks stole the Earth to use in their plan to destroy the universe, he, Jack and Gwen were in the Torchwood Hub below Roald Dahl Plas in Cardiff. Jack left him and Gwen to defend the Hub while he searched for the Doctor. All seemed lost when a Dalek penetrated the Hub, but they were saved by a timelock that froze the Dalek in time until it was destroyed. Gwen and Ianto helped to set up the ‘towrope’ that The Doctor used to get Earth back to its proper place in the solar system.
