The Macra were first seen on Earth Colony World where they kept the Humans under their control. They were an intelligent, giant crab-like species that seemed to have lived on the planet before the humans arrived. They invaded the Human control centre and became the secret masters of the people, only coming out at night when the humans were in their quarters under curfew. They had strong hypnotic powers and the ability to ‘speak’ through TV. They hypnotised the humans into believing they were blissfully happy while working as slaves in a vast gas mine. The gas was deadly to the miners but vital to the Macra. After The Doctor destroyed their habitat they were assumed dead.
However, a devolved, animalistic version of the Macra were found below New New York, on New Earth. They were living in the thick fog of exhaust gases on the main motorway under the city, tracking the flying cars by their engine vibrations and snatching at them when they get too close. The Doctor referred to them as the remnant of a once mighty empire that was "the scourge of this galaxy". They are presumed to have perished once the motorway was opened and the exhaust gases cleared.
