Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland, Empress of India, was born in 1819 and reigned as Queen from 1837 and Empress from 1876 until 1901. By 1879 she was a widow with deep emotional problems that modern psychiatry would have been hard pressed to solve. That she travelled to Scotland frequently is a matter of historical fact. That she had Haemophilia is another historical fact, though a less well known one. How she came by the disease, is unknown. Whether she ever actually said “I am not amused” is another unknown of history. Her reaction to The Doctor, suspicious of his changing accent, blaming him for the unnatural events that took place, are very much in character with a woman of changing moods and limited understanding of life beyond her own Court. Founding the Torchwood Institute with the narrow aim of protecting the British Empire, it entirely in character.
