Slade was a wealthy businessman who sold his shares in Max Capricorn Enterprises not long before the SS Titanic was hit by the meteoroids. He was not in on the plot, however. It was just business logic that told him to bail on a failing enterprise. He was nasty to Astrid when she spilt a drink and callous about the death of the Steward. He was extremely unpleasant to Morvin and Foon, who he considered beneath him and refused to help get them through the narrow, blocked passage. He was continuously complaining even though he himself was in very little danger. When they were all safe at the end he hugged The Doctor and thanked him, but then bragged about making a lot of money from the transfer of his shares.
