The Animus was a parasitic lifeform that established itself on Vortis, enslaving or driving off the indigenous inhabitants and spreading it's malign influence throughout the planet.

The Animus absorbed Vortis' energy, knowledge, culture and raw materials by spreading web-like filaments across the planet from its central headquarters, The Karcenome.

Controlling the Zarbi and Venom Grubs with golden neck braces it dominated Vortis, and planned to dominate other worlds, including Earth.. It reckoned without The Doctor.

Death – The Animus was finally killed by the weapon the Menoptera developed.
