The Mechanoids were spherical self-repairing robots with pincer-like arms. They were sent to the planet Mechanus to prepare the way for an Earth colony, building and maintaining a gigantic city on stilts above the Fungoid-infested jungle. However, due to an interstellar war the colonists never came, leaving the Mechanoids to continue their duties alone for decades, imprisoning anyone unfortunate enough to crash-land on Mechanus because the requisite authentication codes had been long forgotten on Earth. They used flame-throwers and pincers to fight the Daleks, who they recognised as their enemy.
