Saladin is the leader of the Saracens who have swept across the Holy Lands capturing them in the name of Islam, an enemy of Christianity. In this story, though, he appears to be no better and no worse than the Christian king. He deals fairly with Barbara and des Preaux and is courteous to Ian when he arrives as an emissary. He is far from the embodiment of evil he is supposed to be.
