Eternals are a race of powerful beings who exist outside of time, and live forever in eternity. Even though they are gifted with great mental powers, their minds are devoid of emotions. The Guardians of Time offered them Enlightenment, a crystal of unknown powers and great value, as the prize of a planet-spanning space race. The Black Guardian hoped that, with such a prize, the Eternals might wreak havoc throughout the Universe. Instead, the Doctor won the race but turned down Enlightenment. The Eternals were banished to their eternal void by the White Guardian.
