Harriet Jones was a backbencher who had an appointment with the Prime Minister when her world was turned upside down by an alien invasion. She witnesses the murder of General Asquith and begs Rose and The Doctor to help. Trapped in the Cabinet room, and assuming command as the only genuine MP in the building she orders The Doctor to carry out his plan that will mean blowing up the building they are in.

The Doctor predicts that she will be a successful Prime Minister, but after the events of the Christmas Invasion when she crosses him by firing on the retreating Sycorax ship he causes a vote of no confidence in her government. That action somewhat backfired on him since it allowed Harold Saxon, aka The Master, to seize power.

Harriet retired from politics, but she kept her eye on what was happening in UNIT and Torchwood, and was aware that events were gathering pace that even those two organisations knew nothing about. She used the subwave network developed by the Mr Copper Foundation to contact all of the Doctor's former companions and to co-ordinate them in the effort to find The Doctor and defeat the Daleks. She did so, however, knowing that her own safety would be compromised. She considered her life worth less than the peace and freedom of the universe.

Death: Harriet was killed by the Daleks when they traced her through the subspace network.
