Over 700 episodes, running from 1963 to 1989, then revived in 2005, inbetween a film. The great American science fiction giants, Star Trek and Stargate both have to admit that Doctor Who has them beaten hands down for longevity. (Well, actually, they still argue, but when they do their sums they know they're wrong.)

Spinoffs used to be the preserve of American TV. Star Trek never knew when to call it a day. Stargate Atlantis has taken Gaters to another Galaxy. But Doctor Who was always the one and only - we won't mention the short-lived K-9 and Co. of the early 1980s!

That is until Sunday, October 22nd, 2006, when Torchwood arrived in a blaze of glory, and an infectious smile from one Captain Jack Harkness.

In 2007, the Sarah Jane Adventures became Doctor Who's Second spin off series, starting with a New Years Day Special and followed by a ten part series in September.
