Bernard Kay played four memorable character roles in Doctor Who over the years. With the First Doctor he first appeared as Carl Tyler, one of the rebel humans holding out against the Daleks in the Invasion of Earth and then as Saladin in The Crusade – a production that was justly criticised for using “blacked up” white actors like Kay to play the Saracens. In the Second Doctor era he was Detective Inspector Crossland, trying to get to the bottom of the disappearances at Chameleon Tours. Finally, for the Third Doctor story, Colony in Space he was IMC operative Caldwell.
