In December 1967 Patrick Troughton appeared as The Doctor and as the evil Salamander who sought power over the Earth using an earthquake generating machine. Troughton manages with a difference of expression, of the tension in his face, the look in his eyes, to perform as The Doctor, as Salamander, and as The Doctor pretending to be The Doctor with distinct differences between the three that meant the viewer was never confused.
