Borusa, of course, goes back to the 1970s. He was Cardinal Borusa in The Deadly Assassin when The Doctor returned to Gallifrey for the first time since his second incarnation was forced to regeneration before his exile on Earth. He had regenerated and become Chancellor by the Invasion of Time, and later became President after The Doctor abdicated. Absolute Power, though, corrupts absolutely, even in a meritocracy, and Borusa sought immortality and everlasting power in The Five Doctors. He got his immortality, as a living relief sculpture on Rassilon’s tomb.

Immortal, though, is immortal, and so his shade found its way to SangC’lune, and now he has taken over Tristie and is set to wield his power over the people of that planet.

The Twelve Houses of Rassilon, is a bit of mythology that I invented for the Marion and Kristoph stories to explain the hierarchy of Time Lord society. The Twelve ancient houses, sired by Rassilon himself are the elite. Then there are the ‘other’ Oldblood Houses that were founded at the same time, but not of Rassilon’s own blood. Then the Newbloods, the nouveau riche of Gallifrey, and then Caretakers, the working class. The question of how exactly Rassilon ‘sired’ twelve sons is something of an ongoing joke through the different story arcs. But the impression is that his wives were willing partipants, whereas Borusa’s idea leaves a lot to be desired.

Davie, having received The Doctor’s soul within himself in the Prototype story, rises to the occasion by accessing The Doctor’s memories of his encounters with Borusa. He, of course, was not supposed to be able to do that. He is unbalanced! The Doctor’s personality is threatening to take him over. In this instance he needs it to defeat Borusa, but afterwards he needs balancing.

And just what IS happening with Spenser? THIS is the seed of a storyline that will pay off later. Watch the space.
