Sydney Newman was the Canadian born, self-educated man who came to the BBC as its head of drama in 1962 and transformed it from radio with pictures with a middle class ethos, to a dynamic, exciting television production unit that made programmes with popular appeal to compete with the new ITV commercial channel. He is especially remembered for creating a certain family orientated science fiction programme to fill the slot between Grandstand and Juke Box Jury.
Sydney Interviewed a few years before his death about Doctor Who.
