Tristram Cary has been described as the Murray Gold of his day, composing the original music to numerous Doctor Who stories in the 1960s, including several of the Dalek stories of the Hartnell era.

He was born in Oxford, the son of novelist Joyce Cary and after serving in the Royal Navy during World War II became a foremost experimentalist in electronic music. He was the co-designer of the first portable synthesizer.

As well as Doctor Who, he scored many well known British films in the 1960s, including the Ealing Comedy, Ladykillers and the Hammer version of Quatermass and the Pit, to name two of the most iconic of titles.

Having moved to Australia in his later years, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to music in England and Australia from the Adelaide Critics' Circle in 2005.

In 2003, a collection of his music for Doctor Who, entitled ‘Devil’s Planets’ was released on CD.
