In Voyage of The Damned, the Sonic Screwdriver first comes out of the pocket when The Doctor wants to find out more about the Titanic and uses it to access the computer databanks behind the silly videos of Max Capricorn. A more urgent need occurs later when he has to initiate emergency shields over the breach in the ship’s hull and protect the survivors of the meteoroid smash. Sealing doors against the host and unsealing them so they could all reach the reception kept the Sonic Screwdriver busy. Finally, he used it to try to recover Astrid’s data pattern and restore her, before admitting defeat and using it to send her atoms out into space.

Partners in Crime saw The Doctor breaking into Adipose Industries with the Sonic Screwdriver He next used it to investigate the cat flap at Roger Davey’s house. Later he again breaks into Adipose Industries. He has a bit more trouble with the windows, once Miss Foster had deadlocked them with her own sonic pen that she presumably bought at the Villengarde factory. He and Miss Foster duel with the sonic devices and he succeeds in getting hold of her pen. He uses his own Sonic Screwdriver to unfasten the ropes around Penny Carter, the journalist and later caused a highly disruptive sonic noise when he put the two devices together. Finally, of course, the Sonic Screwdriver was instrumental in hacking into the Adipose computer and stopping the conversion of more Adipose.

There wasn’t a lot of places to use a futuristic device in ancient Pompeii. The Doctor used it as a torch when searching Lucius’s house and later in the Sybilline Temple he analyses the hot air in the hypocaust. Later, it gets them into the Pyrovile space capsule.

In Planet of the Ood, The Doctor uses the Sonic Screwdriver to unlock the gate into the secure compound where he and Donna find the slave Ood. Later it gets him into Warehouse 15 and the cells where the natural Ood were kept.

In The Sontaran Strategem/Poison Sky The Doctor first uses the Sonic Screwdriver to open an ATMOS device and examine it. Later he uses it to ward off the Sontaran who arrives in Luke Rattigan’s living room. He tries to dismantle the ATMOS in the land rover that he and Ross are trapped in. The Sonic Screwdriver proves useless against the ATMOS devices on the cars when the poison gas starts to pour out.

So This Is ATMOS?

Later, The Doctor uses the Sonic Screwdriver to turn the video screen over to cartoons while General Staal is being boring about Sontaran battle plans. He later uses it to trace the energy signal of the cloning machine in the basement of the ATMOS factory. Of course, the Sonic Screwdriver is invaluable in building the gadget The Doctor uses to ignite the gas in the atmosphere.

In The Doctor’s Daughter, the sonic screwdriver uncovers the hidden parts of the map of the underground complex. Later, The Doctor uses it to juice up Donna’s phone and allow him to call Martha. It also opens the access panel that gets them into the hidden tunnels. The Doctor uses it to switch off the laser beams across the tunnel and escape from General Cobb.

The 1920s murder investigation in Unicorn and The Wasp didn’t give The Doctor any opportunity for using his sonic screwdriver, but he made up for it in Silence in The Library and Forest of the Dead. It is first used to access the lifesigns monitor on the library computer system. Next it failed to unlock a door which Donna handled with a simple kick. He uses it to examine the football shaped security camera and is disturbed to find it is apparently alive and in pain. The Doctor uses the sonic screwdriver to upgrade the strength of everyone’s space suits to protect them from the Vashta Nerada. He is intrigued to find out that River Song has one of her own. He next uses his own sonic screwdriver to access the teleport to send Donna to the TARDIS. It is useful for analysing shadows and detecting which ones are safe. He also uses it to make the lamps brighter as a way of warding off the Vashta Nerada. He later uses it to detect the power source at the centre of the planet. He uses it to access the core computer. Later, River Song’s sonic screwdriver is used to put her data pattern into the computer where she can live a virtual reality life.

In Midnight, The Doctor uses the sonic screwdriver to stop the multiple sounds from the in-flight entertainment, to the relief of everyone aboard. He uses it again to test the instrument panel in the driver’s cabin. After the attack on the space bus he opens an access panel with the sonic screwdriver only to discover that all the wires were sliced off and sealed.

In Turn Left the sonic screwdriver is only seen once - at the beginning when it falls out of The Doctor’s dead hand.

Lost

Surprisingly, The Doctor uses the sonic screwdriver a lot less than usual in The Stolen Earth. He uses it briefly to access the Shadow Proclamation computer.

Who would want Clom?

The sonic lipstick was used by Sarah Jane Smith to open the door to the airlock that protected her, Mickey and Jackie from the Realty Bomb Test. Later The Doctor uses his own sonic screwdriver to try to fix the power source to get the last planet back into place.

Sonic this!

No, Sonic That.

The last three stories featured the Sonic Screwdriver the least - so much else was going on. Which vindicates those who think it gets used too much. But on the other hand, where would The Doctor be without his sonic Screwdriver?

Eleventh Doctor

There's a new steampunk TARDIS and a steampunk sonic screwdriver to go with it. But first The new Doctor used his old sonic to the full, opening doors, closing doors, opening cracks in time, and finally using it to summon the Atraxi, before it was destroyed by prisoner Zero. At last, on board his new look TARDIS he gets a new look sonic screwdriver.

Victory of the Daleks only saw one use of the Sonic Screwdriver - to open up Bracewell's android body and find the bomb.
