Adam Smith was an alien who used the memories of his victims to give himself corporeal form. Previously trapped for many years in the extra-dimensional Void, Adam was drawn to the Torchwood team by their memories and escaped The Void through the Rift. In only two days he was able to plant false memories in the whole team, posing as a three-year member of Torchwood. Although not evil as such, he used his powers maliciously. He turned Toshiko into a promiscuous extrovert with memories of a year long sexual relationship with him. He made Owen into a shy geek with unrequited feelings for Toshiko, cruelly exploited. He invoked in Jack real but repressed memories of his family before his father's death and his brother's disappearance. He had, however, forgotten about Gwen who was on holiday, and his implanted memories made her forget Rhys. This was one of the first clues that something was wrong. Ianto later found that Adam was not in his hand written diary and confronted him, and he made him believe he was a killer. This, however, was Adam’s downfall since it made Jack suspicious and he helped everyone forget the false memories, therefore effectively killing Adam.
