The REAL Captain Jack Harkness was a young American Volunteer serving as an RAF Group Captain stationed in Cardiff in 1941. He was in a heterosexual relationship, but eventually revealed his attraction to Torchwood's Jack who was accidentally trapped in that time with Toshiko. During his brief time with Jack and Toshiko, he proved himself to be a compassionate man, bonding with Jack over their mutual grief at having to witness those they care for die while they survive. He was distressed to find that the woman he was dating in Cardiff was in love with him. After some understandable indecision, he eventually got up the courage to dance with Torchwood's Jack in front of his men and other officers. They kiss passionately before Jack has to leave through the open rift. Jack knew that the next day, the real Captain Jack Harkness would die in battle.

Con man Jack Harkness had assumed the original Captain Jack's identity after his death. His real name is unknown.
