Estelle was seventeen years old when she met Captain Jack Harkness, an American airman, at a dance in London, during the war. They had a whirlwind romance and promised to be together until they died – a promise Jack at least knew he couldn’t keep. When he was posted away and she went to work as a landgirl they lost touch. Many years later, Estelle was contacted by a man she believed to be her Jack’s son, but of course it actually was Jack himself, making sure she was all right. He had a close relationship with her, and she was clearly fond of him. They argued about the nature of fairies, but not bitterly. Estelle believed in natural magic and used crystals and incense as charms.

Jack was distraught when Estelle was killed by the creatures she believed to be sweet and good. They drowned her in a bone dry garden because she had photographed them.

Eve Pearce was born April 17th, 1929 in Aberdeen in Scotland to a very poor family and was brought up in a one-roomed tenement, her mother dying when she was seven years old. When she was twelve her father re-married and she moved to London. She began her acting career in the early 1960s, making her television debut in 'Z-Cars' in 1962. She also took a recurring role in 'Coronation Street' in 1967, and has made many appearances on stage and television. She is a published poet, often writing on anti-war themes, and is also a volunteer reader with the Interact Reading Service, a charity which arranges therapeutic readings in hospitals for stroke victims.
