Gwen Cooper came to Torchwood from the Cardiff Police Service. Her unbounded curiosity led to her seeking out the mysterious organisation that had taken over a seemingly routine murder investigate. Jack Harkness initially wiped her memory of them, and Ianto crashed her computer to prevent her leaving notes about them. But slowly she regained her memory and returned to Roald Dahl Plas. After the death of Suzi, Jack offered her a job with Torchwood. Initially clumsy and uncertain of her role within the group of self-assured professional alien hunters, she gained confidence. She is the heart of Torchwood, its conscience. She is also fiercely loyal to the team, especially Jack. She stuck by him when the rest were convinced he was dead. She was resentful of his subsequent disappearance, but in his absence she became the nominal leader of the Torchwood team and Jack acknowledged that.

Her relationship with Rhys, her live in boyfriend, has been problematic, due to the need to keep her work secret. A short lived affair with Owen threatened that relationship for a while, but events prompted her to return to her domestic lover. Even when he was let into the Torchwood fold, though, there were problems to be overcome. Rhys was often resentful of her work and of her colleagues, especially Jack, who he saw as a serious rival.

Rhys and Gwen finally got married, despite Gwen coming to the wedding pregnant with an alien baby. Later, the question of when they might have a baby of their own threatened to spoil their newly wed happiness before Jack's psychotic brother, Gray, devastated Torchwood and left the survivors reassessing their lives.

When the events of Children of Earth began to unfold, Gwen had discovered she was pregnant. This fact overrode all of her actions as the team battled not only against am alien threat, but a government bent on destroying them. By the end of the crisis, she and Rhys were almost literally the only members of the team left standing. They witnessed Jack's departure for the stars. Where they and Torchwood go from there, is yet to be revealed.

Born in Ystradgynlais, Eve Myles attended the Ysgol Maes Y Dderwen school in the same class as fellow actor Steve Meo. After training as an actor and completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in acting at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff, she graduated in 2000 and moved to London.

In 2001, Eve had roles in the television film Score and the TV mini-series Tales from Pleasure Beach. From 2002 she took the lead role of Ceri in the BBC Wales drama Belonging, appearing in more than seventy episodes. In 2003 she played young Gwen in the EastEnders spin-out storyline Dot's Story.

From 2003, she was living in Stratford upon Avon, initially playing Lavinia in the Royal Shakespeare Company production of Titus Andronicus. In 2005, she appeared opposite Michael Gambon in Henry IV, Part I and II at the National Theatre.

Eve had a significant part as a stable girl in the ill-fated BBC TV series Trainer, and later reappeared in the BBC short film Colditz in 2005. That led to her being offered the supporting role in the Doctor Who episode "The Unquiet Dead," Russell T Davies commented that: "to me she was one of Wales' best-kept secrets." Davies consequently wrote the part of Gwen for Eve, and as a result of that she moved back to Wales.
