Ianto Jones is a character with hidden depths. He was introduced as little more than a housekeeper around the Torchwood Hub, but it was soon clear he was capable of much more. When it was revealed that he was hiding his former girlfriend, a partially converted cyberwoman in the Hub, his relationship with the other members of the team was severely strained. Later, when he went on his first field operation and was captured by the cannibal villagers, he proved himself able to fight his corner. He gradually gained the respect of the others. It was something of a surprise, though, when he propositioned Jack, with a stopwatch as his object of seduction. Jack took him up on the offer and he became something of a part time lover. When Jack came back from the dead having faced Abaddon, he shared a long, meaningful kiss with him.

When Jack returned from his largely unexplained absence, he asked Ianto on a date, and their relationship seems more or less formalised. He seems happy in that relationship. Jack’s love for him was a key to the unravelling of Adam’s attempt to infiltrate Torchwood. Jack simply refused to accept that Ianto could be a killer and broke through the false memories.

Ianto was a gentle, sympathetic soul, easily likeable. In his flashback, it was shown that he persuaded Jack to give him a job at Torchwood, and was responsible for bringing Myfanwy the Pterodactyl to the Hub. Of course, he only wanted to get in there to hide Lisa, but Jack obviously forgave him for that.

As the events of Children of Earth began to unfold, Jack and Ianto's relationship was a strong one, although neither accepted that they were a couple, they clearly were exactly that. Their happiness with each other was blown apart literally when Jack was killed by a bomb in his stomach. But Ianto single-handedly set about rescuing the resurrected Jack. They worked together even up to infiltrating Thames House. But that was the final act of their story. Ianto was infected by the alien virus and died in Jack's arms. He managed to tell him that he loved him, but Jack never said the words. His expression said it all, though. Ianto's death was the first step in Jack's final disillusionment with life on planet Earth.
