Martha was training to be a doctor when she met The Doctor. After an adventure on the moon, he invited her to take on trip. That became two trips, then three, before she got her own key and invited her to become a permanent companion. That she was becoming fond of The Doctor was obvious to Tallulah, who she met in 1930 London, and when The Doctor, as John Smith, fell in love with Matron Joan Martha felt deeply that he did not fall in love with her. When he became The Doctor again she was embarrassed to have admitted that she ‘loved him to bits’. Martha’s relationship with The Doctor proved difficult because he himself tried to distance himself from her emotionally. He was still on the rebound from Rose and not ready for any deeper relationship. But he seemed glad to have her as a friend. After the events surrounding Mr Saxon - The Master and his attempt to destroy the planet, she left The Doctor to complete her studies. She got a job with UNIT, recommended to them by The Doctor. She has also lent a hand at Torchwood where she was reuinited with Jack Harkness.

During her first season in the role of Martha, there was a tabloid article that reported she had been axed from the show, but despite her character's departure from the TARDIS in season finale "Last of the Time Lords", she returned in series four for five episodes.
