It is difficult to know if Christopher Eccleston’s
post-Doctor Who career is exactly what he expected or chose. In the
immediate aftermath of playing The Doctor he spent a lot of time on
personal appearances. 2006 was meant to be taken up by stage productions
but those failed to materialise. Finally he seems to have got things
onto an even keel with a TV drama for ITV broadcast at New Year 2006,
Perfect Parents. That was followed by the announcement that he was
to appear in Heroes, an American science fiction series. His character
was no more than a cameo, but was well received by fans and critically
acclaimed. He was also praised by the other actors in Heroes for his
professionalism. Meanwhile an independent film, New Orleans Mon Amour
was completed in 2006 but won’t be released until 2008. Before
that, The fantasy film The Dark is rising, in which he plays the evil
Rider, will be released in cinemas. His IMDB profile is starting to
look like that of a sought after and busy actor at last. But has he
yet done anything that lives up to his role as The Doctor? That is
the real question.
